Marriage equality: It’s Oregon’s turn

Ashland Daily Tidings/Southern Oregon Media Group

Same-sex couples and allies of marriage equality gathered Wednesday in Ashland Plaza, in response to U.S. Supreme Court rulings in the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.

An account by Rob Scott for Newswatch 12 placed attendance at “[m]ore than 50 supporters of gay and lesbian rights,” gay and straight couples among them. Amanda Barker, writing for the Ashland Daily Tidings, placed attendance at nearly 100 people.

A video from the rally can be viewed on the website of CBS affiliate KTVL News 10.

“As far as an impact on Oregon residents, the ruling doesn’t change much,” according to Scott. “Same-sex marriage is not recognized in the state, therefore the federal rights between married couples do not apply to same-sex partners.”

But that’s the next step, and this marriage-equality ally looks forward to efforts to overturn a ban restricting marriage in Oregon “between one man and one woman.”

Oregon United for Marriage kicked off its “Summer of Love” canvass on June 1. The campaign’s objective is to collect the 116,284 signatures necessary to place a marriage equality measure on the November 2014 ballot.
