Oregon Public Broadcasting’s auto-caption fail

Via contact form, I wrote to express my concern with Oregon Public Broadcasting for accepting YouTube auto-captioning as a substitute for genuine transcripts.

The YouTube piece I listened to this evening displayed garbled and nonsensical translations, with sections of the audio skipped entirely — no transcription at all.

I’m incredulous that with its commitment to accessibility, OPB would allow auto-captioning on any videos associated with its brand.

In my message, I asked that OPB replace YouTube auto-captioning with person-generated transcriptions, and offered my help with captioning short videos.
