Bellview Elementary School library ‘Top 10’

Back at work this week after snow-day closures delayed my return from winter break: I decided to do things a little differently with the Bellview Elementary School library “Top 10” for January 2017. I filtered results in our Follett-Destiny online catalog for the most often checked-out picture books during the previous 90 days.

I like to create flyers that showcase our most-often used resources in Bellview Elementary School library.

In the No. 1 position, The Fall of General Custard was written by our very own elementary teacher-librarian, Matthew Damon. There has been a lot of interest among students in this local author-celebrity, and the title has experienced ongoing demand, both through check-out and reading in the library.

Several of Bellview’s “Top 10” picture-book titles were donated to Bellview library through “Ashland Reads,” a celebration of literacy, via the Rotary Club of Ashland. Listed in order by their top-10 ranking, they are:

2. The Adventures of Beekle by Dan Santat
4. A Piece of Cake by LeUyen Pham
5. This Book Just Ate My Dog! by Richard Byrne
8. The Amazing Adventures of Bumblebee Boy by David Soman and Jacky Davis

Three other books arrived in Bellview library courtesy of “Ashland Reads.” They were The Full Moon at the Napping House by Audrey Wood, Spike, the Mixed-up Monster by Susan Hood and Wild About Us by Karen Beaumont.

Bellview library received a sackful of quality hardcover books, but the scope of the event went far beyond a set of books in a single school library. Each of the school district’s nine first-grade classrooms received a set of these books, which were chosen by some teachers and members of Rotary.

Teachers read the books aloud to their students and then each first-grader had the opportunity to choose a favorite book that he/she would like to have. During a celebration in May, each child received the book he or she had selected with a nameplate identifying that book as the child’s own.

A program like this can have an enormous impact by exposing a child to books and hopefully contributing to that child becoming a reader throughout his or her lifetime. Once again I am grateful to the Rotary Club of Ashland and its participating partners, Friends of the Ashland Public Library, Treehouse Books and the Interact Club of Ashland (a Rotary-sponsored club for teens).

Remaining titles in Bellview library’s “Top 10” among picture books are:

3. The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems
6. Monster Trouble! by Lane Fredrickson
7. Splat the Cat with a Bang and a Clang, created by Rob Scotten
9. A Big Guy Took My Ball! by Mo Willems and
10. Buzz Boy and Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold
